Classic Sheet Music
Hello Everyone,
I have introduced this new section to present to you some copies of old sheet music I have from the early years of the steel guitar's history.
On this page you will find pics from some early method books below.
Further down, you can find links to other sheet music listed, starting with Aloha Oe.
Below you will find pieces from three method books written in 1915, 1916, and 1937.
Some of our favorite steel guitar players may have learned from books like these.
This is a method book written by Myrtle Stumpf in 1915. This may well be the 1st method book written for the steel guitar.
Here is the cover to the Kamiki Method book published in 1916.
Kamiki was a popular Hawaiian sheet music publishing company in the early 1900's.
And here is a Alvino Rey's Method book from 1937.
As you may know Alvino Rey was an orchestra leader and one of the first inventors of the Pedal Steel Guitar.
Here is page 13 from Stumpf's book:
And here is page 17 from the Kamiki Book:
And here is page 37 from Rey's Book:
Notice the notation they use. It is very similar to the notation I have developed for the modern Pedal Steel Guitar.
They use a normal music staff and mark the bar number and string number above and below the staff.
The only difference from my system is that I put the bar number below the staff and the string number above the staff.
They reverse this, putting the bar above the notation and the string number either next to or below the notes.
Here is a quick reference to the system of notation I use for transcribing music for the steel guitar: STEEL GUITAR NOTATION LEGEND
You can find many examples of my transcription style here: SONG OF THE WEEK
You can find more classic sheet music in the links below.
Most of this uses A Major (Low Bass) tuning. I'll make a note when it is a different tuning.
If you are interested in the many tunings used by steel guitarists throughout the decades,

TUNING TIMELINE I put together.
I hope to post more interesting classic sheet music here in the future, so check back soon.
